By the time students reach high school, they should not only attend their own IEP meetings but take an active role and lead the discussion. It is their future plans that everyone at the table is discussing, so it’s imperative that they learn how to articulate their strengths, preferences, interests, and needs as they relate to their post-school goals. Students cannot simply show up at an IEP meeting and begin leading the discussion. Students will improve the ability to actively participate in their own IEP meeting once they are taught the skill explicitly and then practice repeatedly. MVP Transition Consulting can provide students support in learning this critical self-advocacy skill through 1:1 in person or virtual tutoring sessions.
